Mobile Gas Turbine Generators

Mobile GT Fire Protection Pack

Your mobile gas turbine packs a large amount of heat, fuel and rotating machinery into a trailer or container, often placed close to buildings, people and other plant. Fire protection is what stops a small leak or a hot surface from becoming a fire that destroys the unit and puts your site at risk.

Weak fire protection carries serious risks: a fire that spreads before anyone notices, a gas leak that builds up inside the enclosure, suppression that fails or harms people, and permits refused because the layout is unsafe. That means lost assets, injuries and a power project that stops before it starts.

USP&E Helps You Deploy Mobile Turbines Safely

We know you need fast power without taking risks with fire. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our engineers and project managers supply, install and run mobile and fixed gas turbine plants for data centres, utilities, industry and mines. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to be a fire engineer. You need to understand how the package detects and fights fire, how gas and fuel are shut off, how the site layout keeps fire contained and how the system is tested and kept ready.

How the Package Detects and Fights Fire

Most mobile gas turbine packages have a fire protection system inside the turbine enclosure. Detectors sense heat, flame or both, and are placed where fires are most likely, near the combustion section, fuel lines and hot casings. When a fire is detected, the system shuts the turbine down, closes the fuel supply and stops ventilation fans.

The enclosure is then flooded with a suppression agent. Many packages use gaseous agents that reduce oxygen or break the fire chemistry, while some use water mist. Gaseous agents can be dangerous to people, so the system includes warning alarms, a delay before release and lockouts that stop release while someone is inside. Your crew must be trained on these.

Ask your supplier which detection and suppression systems are fitted, what standards they follow and when they were last tested and serviced. Our guide on how trailer-mounted turbines work explains the main parts of a typical package.

Gas Detection and Fuel Shut-Off

A gas leak inside the enclosure is one of the main fire and explosion risks. Packages that burn natural gas have gas detectors inside the enclosure and often near the fuel skid. A low-level alarm warns operators, and a high-level alarm trips the turbine, closes the fuel valves and keeps ventilation running to clear the gas.

Fuel shut-off valves must close fast and reliably, both automatically and from emergency stops placed outside the enclosure. On dual-fuel units, the liquid fuel system needs its own leak detection and shut-off. Check that your site’s gas supply has its own isolation valve outside the package, so the fuel can be cut even if the package controls fail.

Ventilation matters too. Enclosure fans keep temperatures down and dilute any small leaks. If ventilation fails, the turbine should alarm or trip. Our sister site covers moving turbine packages safely to site, which is the first step before any of these systems are commissioned.

Site Layout, Testing and Readiness

Lay out the site to contain any fire. Keep safe distances between the turbine, fuel storage, transformers, buildings and site boundaries, as your local fire rules and insurer require. Provide fire water or extinguishers for fires outside the enclosure, clear access for fire crews and escape routes for your team.

Test the fire and gas systems during commissioning and on a set schedule after that. Check detectors, alarms, shut-off valves and suppression controls, and record every test. Keep suppression agent cylinders charged and in date. Brief local fire services on the site so they know what they will face. Many bridge power deployments depend on getting these approvals quickly.

Fire protection matters for every fleet, from gas turbine generators, used/new gas turbines and a remanufactured GE Frame 6B to natural gas engines/stations. Teams doing hyperscale EPC/O&M work apply the same care to AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.

FAQ: Mobile GT Fire Protection Pack

How does fire protection work in a mobile gas turbine?

USP&E explains that detectors inside the enclosure sense heat or flame, then the system trips the turbine, closes the fuel supply and stops ventilation fans. The enclosure is flooded with a suppression agent, with alarms, delays and lockouts that protect anyone near the unit.

Why does a mobile gas turbine need gas detection?

USP&E treats gas detection as essential because a leak inside the enclosure is a major fire and explosion risk. Low-level alarms warn operators, while high-level alarms trip the turbine, close fuel valves and keep ventilation running to clear the gas safely.

Are gaseous suppression agents safe for people?

USP&E notes that some gaseous suppression agents can harm people, so packages include warning alarms, a delay before release and lockouts that stop release while someone is inside. Your crew should be trained on these controls before they work near the enclosure.

How should a mobile gas turbine site be laid out for fire safety?

USP&E lays out sites with safe distances between the turbine, fuel storage, transformers, buildings and boundaries, as local rules and insurers require. Sites also need fire water or extinguishers, clear fire crew access and marked escape routes for your team.

Where are USP&E’s offices for mobile gas turbine projects?

USP&E supports mobile gas turbine projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville for US sites, with engineers who review fire and gas systems. Johannesburg and Cape Town support deployments across Africa, London covers contracts and finance, and Wuxi supports parts and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include NEOM in Saudi Arabia, where USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface.

Is USP&E a broker for mobile gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E supplies, installs and runs gas turbine plants with its own engineers, so the team that checks your fire and gas systems is the same team that commissions the unit and stays accountable for safe running.

How fast can USP&E review a mobile turbine fire system?

USP&E can review your package details and proposed site layout as soon as you share them. Engineers check the fire and gas systems and spacing first, so you can resolve safety gaps early and keep permits and insurer approvals on track.
