Mobile GT Black Start Pack
Your mobile gas turbines were brought in because the grid is weak, late or absent. That also means there may be no grid to start them. Turbine starting systems, lube oil pumps, fuel gas compressors and controls all need power before the first unit turns.
If the black-start pack is undersized, unfuelled or never tested, a site-wide trip leaves you dark until someone brings in help. On a remote project or a critical bridge-power site, that delay can mean lost production, missed milestones or a safety risk.
USP&E Helps You Build a Mobile GT Black Start Pack
We know mobile fleets are often set up quickly, and black start is the part that gets assumed rather than proven. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they size, connect and prove black-start packs for mobile gas turbine fleets on sites where there is no grid to fall back on. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
The pack is not just a generator in a corner. It is a starting source, a fuel plan, a sequence and a test record that together prove the site can recover from a total loss of power.
Size the Starting Power With Margin
List everything you must power before and during the first turbine start: starting system, lube oil pumps, enclosure fans, fuel gas compressors or heaters, controls, battery chargers and site lighting. Get real figures from each package supplier.
Size the black-start genset or battery source for that load, with margin for motor inrush and auxiliary loads that run at the same time. A source that only just starts the turbine on a cool day may fail in the heat.
Decide how the pack connects. A dedicated black-start bus, clear breaker positions and labelled cables make a stressful restart much simpler for your crew.
Keep Fuel Flowing With No Grid
Check that your fuel supply works with no external power. Fuel gas compressors, heaters and metering skids may need power from the black-start source. If you use liquid fuel, check transfer pumps and day tank levels.
Fuel the black-start pack itself and keep it fuelled. A diesel black-start genset with an empty tank is a common and avoidable failure.
Agree what happens if fuel pressure is low at the moment of start. Your sequence should say whether to wait, start a different unit or switch fuel.
Write the Sequence and Prove It on Site
Write the dead-bus start and load pick-up sequence step by step: black-start source on, auxiliaries energised, first turbine started and synchronised to a dead bus, then further units and load blocks added in a set order.
Test your full black start on site before the fleet carries critical load, and repeat it after major changes. Record times, voltages and any problems, and fix them before you sign off.
Black start matters wherever mobile fleets bridge to permanent power. Bridge sites using a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations need the same proof, and campuses moving towards AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, are planned by a hyperscale EPC/O&M team that tests restart before handover. Your mobile gas turbine generators deserve the same standard.
Global Offices Behind Your Mobile Gas Turbine Programme
Your team wants answers in its own time zone. USP&E’s offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) lead your mobile GT site receiving and fuel hook-up conversations in the US, from the first data request to the site visit, so questions about fuel, interconnection and delivery are answered by people who can be on site.
The wider network carries the heavy lifting for mobile gas turbine trailers, Frame 6B bridges and BOP skids: London (162-168 Regent Street) for structuring and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) for engineering and project controls, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) for design and commissioning support, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) for China supply chain and manufacturing.
For mobile GT black start, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can size your starting source with the site lead and witness the full dead-bus test before your fleet carries load. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E’s reach covers 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and the company is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Mobile Gas Turbine Buyers
You want proof that USP&E has delivered and started gas turbine power on demanding sites. These projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
- MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build a Mobile GT Black Start Pack
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share fleet data, single-lines and site conditions under NDA. 2. Receive a black-start pack design and dead-bus sequence. 3. Test on site, then keep the pack ready under accountable O&M.
- Confirm what starting power each mobile unit needs and where it comes from with no grid.
- Size a black-start genset or battery source with margin for auxiliaries.
- Check that fuel supply works with no external power.
- Write the dead-bus start and load pick-up sequence.
- Test the full black start on site before the unit carries critical load.
- Keep the black-start pack inspected and fuelled under O&M.

FAQ: Mobile GT Black Start Pack
Why do mobile gas turbines need a black start pack?
USP&E plans black start because mobile fleets often run where there is no reliable grid to start them. Your turbines need power for starting, lube oil, fuel gas and controls before the first unit turns. Without a proven pack, a site-wide trip can leave you dark.
How should the black start source be sized?
USP&E sizes the source for every load that runs before and during the first start, with margin for motor inrush and hot weather. You get real figures from each package supplier. A source that only just works on a cool day may fail when you need it.
What fuel checks matter for black start?
USP&E checks that fuel gas compressors, heaters, metering and any liquid fuel pumps can run from the black-start source. Your black-start genset also needs its own fuel kept topped up. An empty day tank is one of the most common black-start failures.
How often should a mobile black start be tested?
USP&E tests the full dead-bus sequence on site before the fleet carries critical load and again after major changes. Your test record shows times, voltages and problems found. Regular tests keep crews familiar with a sequence they hope never to need.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support mobile fleets?
USP&E leads mobile gas turbine work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US fleet and campus projects. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town support African sites, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing. All offices share one project file.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover NEOM, where USP&E supplied zero-hour gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for mobile turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, supplies, builds and operates power plants with its own engineers, so the team that sizes your black-start pack also tests it on site and stays accountable to you when the fleet must restart.
How fast can USP&E respond on a black start design?
USP&E can start reviewing your fleet data, single-lines and site conditions as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag undersized sources and fuel gaps first, then issue the sequence, with timing set by data quality and site access.
Prove Your Fleet Can Restart From Dark
Get black start right and a site-wide trip becomes a short, practised recovery. Get it wrong and the first sign is a dark site waiting for outside help. USP&E will help you size, sequence and prove your restart with confidence.
