Multi-unit mobile gas turbine farms are plants, not parked trailers

One package on a pad is a project. Three to ten packages become a temporary power station: shared fuel, switchgear, protection, access roads, and noise envelopes. Layout mistakes create deadlocks — units that cannot be maintained without shutting neighbours, cables that block demobilisation, or coolers that recirculate hot exhaust. Layout themes that belong on the first sketch

Access and maintainability

Cranes, filter change-outs, and trailer pull-out paths need corridors that survive mud season. If a unit cannot leave without tearing cables, the farm is not mobile in practice.

Air inlets, exhausts, and recirculation

Shared versus dedicated BOP

Fire, blast, and escape

Spacing for firefighting access, fuel truck routes, and muster points is not optional HSE theatre. Write it into EPC scope, risk, and stakeholder disciplines.

Electrical farm architecture

  • Block diagrams — N+1 thinking, sectionalising, and black-start paths for islands.
  • Synchronising — multi-package dead-bus and live-bus discipline per synchronizing guidance.
  • Protection — coordination that survives adding a fourth package mid-campaign.
  • Hybrid mixes — GT blocks with diesel bridging from diesel generators where fuel or peaking duty requires it.

EPC sequence that prevents rework

  1. Freeze duty, N+1 philosophy, and maximum package count before civil grading.
  2. Lay corridors for fuel, cable, and demobilisation on the same drawing as noise receptors.
  3. Commission package-by-package with farm-level protection tests — not only single-unit load banks.
  4. Train O&M on lockout boundaries between units under USP&E O&M.
  5. Keep a growth envelope so adding units does not orphan the permit file — see emissions permitting.

Commercial notes for farm-scale mobile power

Rental fleets, owned redeployable blocks, and hybrid wraps scale differently when unit count rises. Boards should stress-test demobilisation cost per package and shared BOP residual value. Controls, black-start, and human factors on dense pads

Farm HMIs that hide which package is in maintenance create lockout errors. Label physical boundaries, paint corridors, and train night crews on islanding sequences. Black-start paths should name which unit starts first, which bus it closes to, and how diesel bridging participates if gas pressure falters. Synchronising honesty remains non-negotiable — synchronizing mobile GT packages.

Noise and emissions envelopes scale with unit count; farm layout is where those envelopes meet reality — noise and emissions envelopes. Permitting growth envelopes prevent the fourth package from becoming a surprise filing — emissions permitting.

Phased build without stranding the first megawatts

Many farms energise two packages while civil continues for four. Temporary cable routes must not block the next foundations. Temporary fuel headers should have isolation points that allow expansion without full shutdown. Bridge-power programmes during larger EPC often use this pattern — bridge power during EPC. Conversion later is cheaper when growth was drawn on day one — demob to permanent conversion.
