Mobile Gas Turbine Generators

Mobile GT Step-Up Transformer Pack

Your mobile gas turbine is only useful once its power reaches the site bus. The step-up transformer trailer is where many fast deployments slow down: a wrong vector group, a tap set for another site, a weak earth or untested protection can delay energisation or damage equipment on the first close.

You cannot afford a bridge-power unit that sits idle on a trailer. If the transformer pack is not checked before the convoy arrives, you are carrying delay, damage and outage risk into the first week on site.

USP&E Helps You Connect a Mobile GT Step-Up Transformer

We know mobile power is bought for speed, and that speed disappears when the connection is not ready. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers check transformer ratings, plan trailer layouts and test insulation, ratio and protection so mobile gas turbines connect safely and fast. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

A good transformer pack is prepared before mobilisation. It tells your site team exactly where the trailer goes, how it is earthed and what tests prove it is ready.

Match the Transformer to the Site Connection

Confirm transformer rating, voltage ratio, vector group and tap range against the site connection before mobilisation. A trailer that last served a different network may need its taps or connections changed.

Check fault levels and protection settings with the network you are joining. The utility or site electrical team will want to see the study before they allow a close.

Confirm cooling and oil condition. A transformer that has travelled far needs an oil check and a look at its breathers, gauges and bushings. Road vibration can loosen connections and disturb internal parts, so a pre-energisation inspection belongs in your pack every time the trailer moves.

Plan the Trailer Position, Cables and Earthing

Plan trailer position, cable routes and clearances before the convoy arrives. Your layout should keep access for cranes and fire vehicles and keep cables away from traffic.

Design the earthing for the site, not for the last deployment. Soil conditions change from site to site, and a weak earth puts people and equipment at risk during a fault.

Mark the live boundary from the moment the trailer is connected. Temporary sites often have more visitors than permanent plants, and your fence, signs and permit rules should assume that someone unfamiliar with high voltage will walk past the trailer every day.

Test Before First Energisation and Plan Next Steps

Test insulation resistance, ratio and protection trips before first energisation. Record the results in a pack your site team can show the network operator.

Plan longer-term cover. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can take over when bridge power ends, and natural gas engines/stations can support auxiliaries in the meantime.

Mobile packs often lead to permanent plant. Your gas turbine generators may give way to AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute on the same site, and the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is planned by one hyperscale EPC/O&M team that reuses your transformer test records.

FAQ: Mobile GT Step-Up Transformer Pack

Why does the step-up transformer delay mobile deployments?

USP&E sees mobile deployments slowed by vector group mismatches, wrong tap settings, weak earthing and untested protection. Each problem stops energisation. Your transformer pack should be checked against the site connection before the convoy leaves, not after it arrives on a site waiting for power.

What transformer details must match the site?

USP&E checks rating, voltage ratio, vector group, tap range and protection settings against your site connection and network fault levels. You share the study with the network operator early. A mismatch found on site can cost days of your bridge-power window.

How should the transformer trailer be earthed?

USP&E designs earthing for the soil and layout of each site rather than reusing the last deployment’s plan. You test the earth before energisation. A weak earth risks people and equipment during a fault, especially on busy temporary sites with many visitors.

Which tests prove the transformer is ready?

USP&E tests insulation resistance, turns ratio, oil condition and protection trips before first energisation. You record results in one pack for the network operator and your own team. That pack also becomes your baseline for later tests during the deployment and at each redeployment.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support this work?

USP&E leads mobile transformer packs work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, where field and electrical engineers sit close to your convoy. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add field O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered power projects like this before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover Barrick, Resolute and Kinross, where accountable EPC and O&M kept critical power online. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for this equipment?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that tests your transformer stays accountable when bridge power runs. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond on this topic?

USP&E can start reviewing your connection details, transformer data and site plans as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag rating and vector mismatches first, then issue the full transformer pack, with timing set by data quality and site access for your team.
