Mobile Gas Turbine Generators

Multi-unit mobile gas turbine farm layout: making relocatable packages behave like a power station

Multi-unit mobile GT farms fail when trailers are parked without plant thinking. Design access, inlet/exhaust orientation, shared BOP, protection, and growth envelopes so maintenance and demobilisation remain possible.

Layout themes that belong on the first sketch

Access and maintainability

Air inlets, exhausts, and recirculation

Orient inlets away from neighbouring exhausts and dusty roads. Hot-ambient sites amplify recirculation risk — see hot-ambient derate narrative. Coastal salt adds filtration load — see barge and coastal.

Shared versus dedicated BOP

Fire, blast, and escape

Write it into EPC scope, risk, and stakeholder disciplines.

Electrical farm architecture

  • Block diagrams — N+1 thinking, sectionalising, and black-start paths for islands.
  • Synchronising — multi-package dead-bus and live-bus discipline per synchronizing guidance.
  • Protection — coordination that survives adding a fourth package mid-campaign.
  • Hybrid mixes — GT blocks with diesel bridging from diesel generators where fuel or peaking duty requires it.

EPC sequence that prevents rework

  1. Freeze duty, N+1 philosophy, and maximum package count before civil grading.
  2. Lay corridors for fuel, cable, and demobilisation on the same drawing as noise receptors.
  3. Commission package-by-package with farm-level protection tests — not only single-unit load banks.
  4. Train O&M on lockout boundaries between units under USP&E O&M.
  5. Keep a growth envelope so adding units does not orphan the permit file — see emissions permitting.

EPC/EPCM Extreme Ownership means one RACI across civil, mechanical, electrical, and controls — not five vendors arguing at the fence line.

Next steps

  1. Capture site constraints, fuel path, electrical interfaces, and campaign duration in writing.
  2. SEARCH INVENTORY for packages whose transport and duty story fit the pad.
  3. Engage USP&E EPC/EPCM for layout, permits narrative, and commissioning proofs.
  4. Write O&M witness points and demobilisation or conversion gates before first fire.

Common questions

Is there a universal metre spacing for mobile GT farms?

No. OEM clearances, fire codes, and recirculation studies drive spacing. Refuse one-size marketing diagrams.

Can packages face different directions to save space?

Sometimes — if inlet/exhaust and cable logic still work. Recirculation and maintenance access usually punish clever packing.

When should BOP be permanent?

When campaign duration and redeployment odds justify it. Compare via mobile vs permanent BOP guidance; do not default to concrete for optics.

How does farm growth affect permits?

Added packages often trigger modifications. Design a growth envelope and permitting pathway early.

Checklist before the first farm grading cut

  • Maximum unit count and N+1 philosophy frozen before grading
  • Maintenance and demobilisation corridors drawn on the same plot as fuel and cable
  • Inlet/exhaust orientation checked against recirculation and dust roads
  • Farm-level protection and sync tests in commissioning, not only single-unit proofs
  • Firefighting access and fuel truck routes clear of escape paths
  • Permit growth envelope documented before the second package arrives
