What “synchronizing” means on a mobile pad

Synchronizing is more than matching voltage and frequency on a screen. For relocatable gas turbines it includes: choosing dead-bus versus live-bus strategies; coordinating with existing diesel fleets or utility ties; setting reverse-power, under/over frequency, and vector-shift protections that fit temporary topologies; and proving that load steps will not collapse the island. Dead-bus close versus live-bus paralleling

  • Dead-bus close — energise a black site or isolated construction bus. Sequence of operations must define which package is master, how auxiliaries start, and how subsequent units join.
  • Live-bus paralleling — match phase angle, voltage, and frequency to an existing bus (utility soft load, diesel island, or another GT). Sync-check relays and breaker close windows must be tested, not assumed.
  • Hybrid campaigns — morning dead-bus for construction, later live-bus when the utility arrives. Settings files must document both modes.

Can one mobile GT black-start an entire mine camp?

Often yes if auxiliaries, fuel, and sequence of operations are engineered. Multi-package islands usually add resilience — design the master/slave logic before mobilisation.

Sequence-of-operations template owners can demand

Write a living sequence that covers: black-start auxiliaries; first package ready-to-load; dead-bus close; staged load acceptance; joining units; utility soft-load if applicable; planned island separation; and emergency trip recovery.
