Mobile vs permanent BOP: choosing the right envelope for relocatable gas turbines

The turbine package is only half the decision. Balance-of-plant design decides whether megawatts stay mobile, convert cleanly to permanent, or strand CapEx when the load moves.

BOP is where “mobile” succeeds or fails

Buyers fixate on trailer-mounted or modular gas turbines — aeroderivative packages, containerised auxiliaries, factory-tested skids. Yet first-fire and demobilisation both hinge on balance of plant: fuel conditioning, switchgear, transformers, cooling, controls, acoustics, and civil interfaces. Choose permanent BOP for a short bridge duty and you overbuild. Choose flimsy temporary BOP for a five-year island and you underbuild reliability.

USP&E engineers that trade-off as a single accountable programme. Since 2002: 150+ power stations, 25 000 MW supplied, 45+ countries. Inventory for the rotating asset lives at https://www.uspeglobal.com/inventory/ (3,000+ MW); EPC and O&M wrap the BOP so Speed with Excellence and Extreme Ownership are not marketing lines — they are delivery mechanics.

What “mobile BOP” typically includes

  • Skid or trailer fuel trains with clear disconnects
  • Relocatable or containerised MV/LV switchgear
  • Temporary transformers sized to the bridge or camp load
  • Modular control rooms and black-start companions (often diesel — see diesel generators)
  • Pads and cable routes designed for crane-out without demolition of the entire yard

Exact OEM turbine families change with stock — confirm on natural gas turbines rather than freezing a brochure model into the civil design.

What “permanent BOP” typically adds

  • Full substations and interconnect designed for decades
  • Buried piping, larger fuel farms, and permanent water systems
  • Acoustic buildings and civil works sized for long-term HSE and community constraints
  • Spare capacity for additional GT or recip blocks as load grows
  • Owner’s metering, SCADA depth, and offtaker interface standards

Permanent BOP is the right call when load duration and offtake certainty justify it — mining plants with long life-of-mine power, utility baseload, or hyperscale campuses. For phased data-centre duty, USP&E’s data centre power solutions frame modular thermal blocks that can grow; nearer-term bridge may still use mobile envelopes.

Decision matrix owners actually use

Favour mobile BOP when

  1. Duty is bridge, peak, or relocatable camp power with an exit date.
  2. Land tenure or ore-body location may change.
  3. Capital must preserve residual value for redeployment.
  4. Schedule is months-critical and civil packages cannot wait.

Favour permanent BOP when

  1. Offtake and load are contracted for the long term.
  2. Grid code or lender standards require permanent interconnect depth.
  3. Multiple units will expand on the same plot over years.
  4. Acoustic, water, and fuel logistics make temporary envelopes impractical.

Hybrid envelopes

Many USP&E projects land in the middle: permanent interconnect stub and fuel header, with relocatable turbine and switchgear modules that can grow or leave. That hybrid is an EPC design problem — see power plant EPC/EPCM — not a purchase-order afterthought.

O&M implications of each envelope

Mobile BOP demands disciplined preservation and change-control so demobilisation stays economical. Permanent BOP demands long-horizon spares strategy and local capability building. In both cases, operations and maintenance with SmartPower monitoring and UpKeep CMMS keeps performance measurable. USP&E’s 400+ engineers and project managers support either path from offices including Shanghai, Dubai, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Cairo, Bamako, Monrovia, Lome, Knoxville, Colorado Springs, London, Dakar, Tel Aviv, and Dar es Salaam.

If the permanent path later includes new modular hyperscale iron, Unique-site FX-45 language stays constrained: 45 MW-class, 50 Hz and 60 Hz, new modular, capacity slots from 2028 only — no invented heat-rate, CapEx, or emissions claims.

Trust and compliance while you choose

  • ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018
  • FCPA and OFAC compliant posture for cross-border projects
  • Commercial history without client or partner lawsuits across more than two decades (paraphrased)
  • Inventory CTAs only to https://www.uspeglobal.com/inventory/

Next steps

  1. Score duty duration, exit probability, and interconnect depth before picking an envelope.
  2. SEARCH INVENTORY for turbine packages that fit the chosen transport and BOP philosophy.
  3. Commission USP&E EPC to draw mobile, permanent, or hybrid envelopes — contact.
  4. Write conversion and demobilisation options into the same contract.

FAQ — mobile vs permanent BOP

Can we start mobile and convert later?

Yes — if interconnect stubs, fuel headers, and civil interfaces are designed for conversion. That is an EPC choice at FEED, not a field improvisation.

Does permanent BOP mean we cannot use trailer turbines?

No. Many sites use relocatable turbines on permanent interconnect and expand BOP over time.
